Your story – Heather Scott
What’s the first major news story or political event you remember living through as a child?
The first major news event that I really remember understanding was the assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963. It was on the news in the evening and I just rememeber the shock horrror of everyone that such a thing could happen. Back then news papers and evening television news or luchtime news on the radio were the only ways of geting the information, you were not bombarded with it in every possible form as you are these days. It didn’t really affect me in any way that I remember I was only eleven but I do remember feeling incredibly sorry for his two small children when they showed them on the television after his funeral. I do remember hearing about the Bay of Pigs situation a few years before but didn’t really understand what was going on.
The news event that did have more of an affect on me was the Aberfan disaster in 1966, probably because I was older, fourteen, but also it was a lot closer to home and the people who died were children more or less the same age as me or kids in the village. I remember coming home from school and hearing about it, people just couldn’t understand how it could have been allowed to happen, everyone was talking about it, how did it happen? why did it happen? All of those children. It was something that was spoken about for weeks, months. We even talked about it in school, but then we were teenagers.
