Your story – Heather Scott

Describe your mother and write about one favourite memory with her.

My mum was quite small about 5’3″ and very slim she only weighed about 6 to 6.5 stone with brown hair and she had a really dirty laugh. She was probably more outgoing than my dad, whereas dad was really only comfortable with people he knew mum would easily get to know new people. She loved Christmas I rememember, before I left home, every Christmas Eve she would be eager to know what was in the Christmas presents and coming up to midnight she would say Heath shall we open one. After I left home she insisted on dad getting a Christmas tree, every year he would say we won’t have a tree this year and mum would say to him we better had Heather will be home knowing full well that would make him get one.  She was an excellent cook, didn’t use recipes or weigh or measure anything just did it all be eye; she used to cook for half the village, anyone who was ill or on their own they would get a Sunday dinner, she would put up an extra one for them and Sunday lunch time you would see her carrying a covered plate of food to someone across the village. She liked to feed people but her own diet was appalling, she only ate meat and potatoes, no vegetables or fruit but she made sure the rest of us did, most of the time she lived on toast. They moved back to the village after my dad retired from the farm and I remember once, when I was home, the front door, which lead straight into the living room, was open as it usually was when the weather was good, some friends of the family were there having tea and cake and talking when I arrived and there was some man sitting by the door with a cup of tea and a piece of cake, after he left I asked who he was no one, including my mum, knew but someone said he  asking for directions and when mum saw himshe offered him a cup of tea and a wesh cake, typical of my mum.

One bad habit she had was smoking, she literally chain smoked and her health suffered for it, she was only 75 when she died.
