Your story – Heather Scott
What country that you’ve travelled to has surprised you the most?
I visited Andrew out in Penang when he was on detachment, during a long weekend off six of us flew down to Singapore then four of us hired a car and drove up through the Malay Peninsula. The country was beautiful but it was the people that really struck me. I didn’t know what to expect; they were so friendly, respectful and polite, but what struck me most was that they were just so laid back, there was no rush to do anything, completely different to the western world where everything has to be done yesterday. I remember one place where we stopped, I can’t remember the name of the place, we were looking for somewhere to eat and saw this open air restaurent which looked really very welcoming. Luckily we were not in a rush to get anywhere because getting served was not quick, we were there for about fours hours in total by the time we were served etc. But it wasn’t because they were slow or incompetent, the whole atmosphere with the staff and the other diners was so friendly and easy going and laid back that you really didn’t notice the time or even care about it we just enjoyed it all. That place seemed a perfect example of what we saw in other places as we passed through, it is one place I would love to go back to but, as I said, unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the place.
