Your story – Heather Scott
Do you remember your first job interview?
My first job was in a supermarket while I waited to join the WRAF but, the first ‘interview’ that I had would have been at the RAF recruitment office. Initially it was just a talk, not a real inteview, asking what areas I was interested in, my education etc. and then explaining the process that would follow, they also tried to persuade me to apply for a commission. I had to return at a later date to sit a series of attestation tests and a medical. The tests were to ensure that I was good enough to join and in what sort of trade, I was a little nervous when I returned for the tests as I had no idea what they would contain, but I didn’t need to worry as I got top marks on all of the tests, even the technical ones which was suprising, and passed so highly that I had the pick of the trades but I had already told them that I wanted to work in air traffic control. The medical was also worrying, if they found anything unusual they would not take you or it could affect what area you worked in, like colour blindness would prohibit you from working in air traffic control. Again I passed the medical with flying colours. Unfortunately at that time they did not have any openings in air traffic so tried to persuade me to pick one of the trades that they did have an opening for, but I was adamant that I was only interested in air traffic control so I was told that they would be in touch when there was an opening, it took nearly a twelve month before they did.
